Despite this, Merz urged both sides to work together to repair and restore trust across the Atlantic. Merz emphasized the need for Europe to reduce its excessive reliance on the United States for defense. He disclosed that he is engaged in confidential discussions with French President Macron about establishing a joint nuclear deterrence system in Europe.
