AI TRENDS | Tether AI Research Launches Offline Open-Source Translation Models

Tether AI Research has announced a series of open-source AI translation models that can run offline on local devices. According to Foresight News, the lineup includes TranslatePsy-AfriSLM, which supports 19 African languages, TranslatePsy-AfriNano, which supports 8 African languages, and TranslatePsy-EuroNano, which covers 9 European languages, with user data kept on the local device throughout. The smallest version of TranslatePsy-AfriSLM, with 800 million parameters, outperformed several much larger models on multiple translation benchmarks. The team said it used a new data-quality filtering method that removed up to 96% of low-quality training data. TranslatePsy-EuroNano's smallest deployment version requires only 36MB of storage, about 94% less than similar solutions. The models have been released on Hugging Face.
