Ugandan authorities have arrested two young women in the northwestern city of Arua, accusing them of publicly kissing in violation of the country's Anti-Homosexuality Act, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. According to Ming Pao, a police spokesperson confirmed on Thursday that the two women, 22-year-old musician Wendy Faith, known by her stage name Torrero Bae, and 21-year-old unemployed Alesi Diana Denise, were detained following a report from neighbors. The neighbors alleged that the women engaged in 'sexually suggestive behavior' by kissing in public and frequently hosted gatherings of other women at their residence, suspected to be homosexual parties.
Reports indicate that after their arrest last Wednesday, the women initially struggled to obtain legal representation but were later granted bail. The investigation is ongoing, and no formal charges have been filed yet. Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act is considered one of the strictest globally, with potential life imprisonment even for consensual acts. The law stipulates harsher penalties, including the death penalty, for 'aggravated homosexuality,' which involves repeat offenses or cases involving minors or vulnerable individuals.
