US President Trump announced the removal of Attorney General Tony Bundy and appointed Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as acting Attorney General. Todd Blanche previously served as Trump's personal lawyer in his criminal cases in New York and was appointed Deputy Attorney General after Trump's re-election in 2024. During his tenure as Deputy Attorney General, Todd Blanche ordered the disbandment of the Justice Department's National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team, established in 2022 during former President Biden's term, and signed a memorandum requiring prosecutors to cease bringing lawsuits regarding regulatory violations in the crypto industry. This memorandum was cited by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York in the case of Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm, ultimately leading to the dismissal of one of the charges. According to ProPublica, Todd Blanche still held approximately $159,000 to $485,000 worth of crypto assets, including BTC, SOL, ADA, and ETH, at the time of signing the crypto enforcement memorandum, violating his previous ethical commitment to divest assets before handling crypto-related matters. His government ethics disclosure in July 2025 revealed that he had transferred his crypto assets to his children and grandchildren.
