Talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad have encountered a major obstacle. U.S. officials proposed a 20-year halt to Iran's uranium enrichment activities, but Iranian representatives, in a formal response on Monday, stated they would only accept a suspension period of no more than five years. The U.S. president has rejected this proposal. Furthermore, the U.S. demanded that Iran move its highly enriched uranium stockpile abroad, a demand rejected by Iranian officials who insist on keeping it within their borders and proposed significantly reducing the enrichment level to render it unusable for nuclear weapons. Both sides are currently considering continuing dialogue, but no further meetings have been scheduled.
