Admiral Samuel Paparo has revealed that the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command is actively running a Bitcoin node as part of its cybersecurity research efforts. According to NS3.AI, Paparo informed the Senate Armed Services Committee on April 21 that the proof-of-work mechanism inherent in Bitcoin has significant applications in computer science, particularly for safeguarding data and increasing the operational costs for cyber adversaries. This marks the first instance of a sitting U.S. combatant commander publicly discussing Bitcoin as a national security asset during congressional hearings. As of April 22, the Department of Defense had not provided further details on the scope of these operational tests.
