Honda has decided to indefinitely freeze its plans to construct an electric vehicle (EV) plant in Canada, according to Jin10. The decision comes as a result of slowing EV demand in the United States. Honda also plans to cease production of EVs currently sold in North America by 2026, shifting its focus to hybrid vehicles (HV) as the core of its North American strategy. The company will halt the construction of the EV and battery plants initially planned for Ontario. When the construction plan was announced in April 2024, production was expected to start as early as 2028. However, due to the EV market not reaching the anticipated scale, Honda postponed the production timeline by about two years in May 2025. With no improvement expected in the short term, Honda has decided to freeze the plan and has begun coordinating with the Canadian government. The company will also consider canceling the plan altogether based on future North American policy developments.
