NEAR Protocol has announced plans to integrate post-quantum cryptography support into its network. According to ChainCatcher, the NEAR team is working on implementing a NIST-approved lattice-based signature scheme, FIPS-204, as the first post-quantum signature option. This development will allow NEAR account holders to rotate keys for quantum security through a single transaction.
The NEAR One team is collaborating with software and hardware wallet providers to enhance post-quantum support. Additionally, NEAR's chain signature feature can offer threshold signatures for over 35 chains, and the NEAR Intents team is developing a quantum-safe cross-chain signature solution. This initiative aims to provide a quantum-secure environment if other chains lag in adopting post-quantum cryptography.
The consensus mechanism, validators, block synchronization, and transaction signatures will also need to evolve for the post-quantum era, with the goal of achieving a seamless future-compatible migration.
