House Intelligence Committee Warns AI Could Aid Terrorists

According to CNBC, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence urged U.S. spy agencies to better prepare for so-called Black Swan artificial intelligence risks, warning in a new report that terrorists or adversaries could use the technology to develop more dangerous weapons and carry out deadlier attacks. The report, written to review U.S. efforts over the past quarter century to address intelligence failures tied to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, said frontier large language models could make it easier for rogue actors to develop and conduct more destructive attacks. The lawmakers said existing safeguards may not be enough to keep pace with AI advances and called on the intelligence community to speed up its responsible adoption of advanced AI tools, including secure systems for collection, analysis and warning, along with testing, human oversight and privacy protections.
