Multiple people familiar with the matter revealed that OpenAI’s board of directors is discussing with Sam Altman about returning to the company as CEO. A source close to Altman said the board agreed in principle to resign and allow Sam Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman to return.
OpenAI’s current board of directors consists of chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, former GeoSim Systems CEO Tasha McCauley, and Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology Strategy Director Helen Toner. None of them holds an equity stake in OpenAI.
Ilya Sutskever, who also co-founded and held leadership responsibilities at OpenAI, was instrumental in ousting Altman, according to multiple sources. And his role in this "coup" is indicative of the power struggle within the company between the research department and the product department. (Theverge)
