The nonprofit Dogecoin Foundation said in a post on X yesterday that it has been building open source projects for the Dogecoin ecosystem and currently employs many full-time developers to work on a range of projects to benefit the Dogecoin community.
Since 2021, the Foundation's goal has been to increase the adoption of Dogecoin as a useful currency for everyday payments by building infrastructure and tools to enable businesses around the world to adopt Dogecoin, as well as researching how to make Dogecoin more scalable and efficient, and become a means of transaction for global users.
This work is primarily funded by the generous donations of Vitalik Buterin, and more recently by another big Dogecoin fan who wishes to remain anonymous.
As we head into 2025, the Foundation is looking to continue the open source work it has been doing, particularly through the new Dogebox decentralized infrastructure system as a tool to get the first one million grassroots retailers to accept Dogecoin as a direct payment layer.
Dogebox will allow everyday businesses to self-host their own online stores, build integrations with existing systems, and allow regular node operators to participate in decentralized payment systems that will provide rewards when people use Dogecoin to purchase goods and services.
The foundation also said it is currently seeking major sponsors for 2025 to jointly benefit from building open source utilities to realize the future of decentralized payments.
