Brendan Greene, the creator of the online battle royale shooter PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG), left the game's development team in 2019 and unveiled plans to create a new generation of game-centric metaverse "Artemis", although it is unlikely to include NFTs.
In a recent interview with IGN, Greene said that he "hasn't even considered" incorporating NFTs, and his game studio PlayerUnkown Productions is currently developing the project.
He added: "We care about getting the engine to a state where we can make things in it, and then as I said, the second game, we will test ideas, but actually right now, we haven't even thought about it. It's more about just making some fun games."
While NFTs may not appear in Greene's metaverse, he said there is a possibility that blockchain technology will be integrated at some point.
"Blockchain is an interesting financial tool as a layer in the digital world... maybe blockchain or hashgraph or future iterations of that technology will be interesting," Greene said. "At the end of the day, it's a digital ledger, and if we can use a digital ledger, we'll find the best one and use it." He also said the metaverse has become a "dirty word," and he dismissed the moves of other metaverse creators as creating "(intellectual property) bubbles" that were made with subpar technology that failed to live up to the hype: "I think everyone is building IP bubbles, and if they're lucky, they may talk to each other at some stage in the future, but that's not the metaverse."
