Odaily Planet Daily News - Public Citizen, a U.S. government, business and consumer watchdog, called for a federal investigation into whether Trump's launch of Meme Coin violated laws prohibiting gift solicitation, and is concerned about the existence of untraceable foreign payments.
Public Citizen filed a formal complaint with the Department of Justice and the Office of Government Ethics on Wednesday, claiming that Trump's social media posts were used to promote TRUMP tokens after taking office in January. The Department of Justice, the Office of Government Ethics and Public Citizen did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Bartlett Naylor and Craig Holman of Public Citizen wrote in the complaint that Trump appeared to be "asking for money for nothing, that is, asking for gifts that benefit him personally." The complaint lists several legal issues surrounding Trump's promotion of Meme Coin, involving multiple overlapping areas of federal law, constitutional provisions and moral standards. (Decrypt)
