Odaily Planet Daily News As the new US government's comprehensive agenda faces increasing resistance from the courts, senior Trump administration officials have publicly questioned the authority of the judiciary as a check on executive power.
In the past 24 hours, officials from Musk to Vice President Vance have not only criticized a federal judge's decision last Saturday to block Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing Treasury records, but also attacked the legitimacy of judicial oversight. Judicial oversight is a fundamental pillar of American democracy, based on the separation of powers.
"It would be illegal if a judge tried to tell a general how to conduct a military operation. It would also be illegal if a judge tried to dictate to the Attorney General how to use her discretion as a prosecutor. Judges have no right to control the legitimate power of the executive branch," Vance wrote on X on Sunday morning.
Hours before the post was published, Musk said last night, "A corrupt judge is protecting corruption. He needs to be impeached immediately!" Musk also shared a post from a user who suggested that the Trump administration was blatantly defying court orders.
"I don't like the precedent it sets for defying judicial decisions, but I just wonder what other options these judges leave us," the user wrote.
The court order against Musk temporarily bars his team from accessing Treasury Department systems that contain sensitive personal data, such as Social Security and bank account numbers for millions of Americans. Musk and his team say they are simply working through government systems to find waste and abuse at the direction of the Republican president. Stephen Miller, deputy White House chief of staff, called the ruling "an attack on the very idea of democracy." (Fortune)
