According to Odaily, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed raising the gas limit on Ethereum's Layer 1 (L1) network. He argues that this move could help resist censorship, enhance Layer 2 (L2) interoperability, and improve security during catastrophic events. Buterin recently published an article titled "Why We Still Need to Raise the L1 Gas Limit in an L2-Dominated Ethereum," discussing the ongoing debate about increasing the L1 gas limit.
The gas limit was recently increased from 30 million to 36 million, marking a 20% capacity boost. Many in the community support further significant increases in the near future. These increases are considered safe due to recent and upcoming technological improvements, such as enhanced efficiency of Ethereum clients, reduced need for storing old history due to EIP-4444, and the development of future stateless clients.
However, Buterin emphasizes the importance of considering whether raising the L1 gas limit is the right long-term strategy within a rollup-centric roadmap. He cautions against the potential centralization risks associated with high L1 usage if the benefits are not clearly established.
