Odaily Planet Daily News US President Trump said he is launching a program to provide residency and citizenship to investors who pay $5 million, providing a new path to legal immigration while he is launching a comprehensive crackdown on undocumented immigrants.
Trump said the program, known as the "gold card," will be launched within two weeks, adding that he does not think his administration needs congressional approval. It is not yet clear what the full scope of the program is and how it will be implemented.
He added: "We will price this card at about $5 million, and it will give you green card privileges," referring to the green card currently issued to permanent residents of the United States.
Lutnick said the move could replace the existing EB-5 program, which allows investment immigrants to obtain green cards by investing a certain amount of money in American businesses. When asked by reporters whether participants need to invest a certain amount of money to qualify for the gold card, Lutnick said: "Yes, that's right," but he suggested that the visa funds could be paid directly to the government. He said: "Instead of having that ridiculous EB-5 program, we're going to end it. We're going to replace it with the 'Trump Gold Card'. They're going to be able to pay $5 million to the US government, and of course they don't need to go through a review to make sure they're good world-class global citizens." (Jin Shi)
