According to CoinDesk, Brendan Gunn, the brother of Australian breakdancer Raygun, has been charged by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) for his involvement in a crypto-related fraud scheme. The charges against Gunn include a criminal offense that could result in a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment, a fine of $37,800, or both.
Raygun, whose real name is Rachael Gunn, gained significant attention on social media following her participation in the 2024 Olympics. Although she eventually withdrew from the competition, her unusual performance sparked widespread discussion and led to the creation of numerous viral memes. Despite her public profile, the charges against her brother are unrelated to her Olympic endeavors.
ASIC's investigation revealed that Brendan Gunn obtained two blank cheques from three victims, amounting to a total of A$181,000 ($113,000), under the pretense of investing in cryptocurrency. Gunn was serving as the director of Mormarkets Pty Ltd, a company that accepted deposits for cryptocurrency and overseas investments. The case highlights ongoing concerns about fraudulent activities in the cryptocurrency sector.
Gunn made an appearance in a local court on Tuesday and is scheduled for another court appearance on April 29. The legal proceedings are expected to shed more light on the details of the alleged fraud and the extent of Gunn's involvement. The case underscores the importance of regulatory oversight in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency market, as authorities continue to crack down on fraudulent schemes to protect investors.
