Odaily Planet Daily News: Twenty Democratic-led states filed two lawsuits on Tuesday, trying to prevent the Trump administration from forcing states to cooperate with immigration enforcement, otherwise billions of dollars in special funding for transportation construction, counterterrorism and emergency preparedness will be withheld. In a lawsuit filed in the federal court in Rhode Island, the states pointed out that the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Department of Homeland Security are illegally using federal funds to coerce states to obey Trump's tough immigration policies. Rob Bonta, the Democratic Attorney General of California who led the lawsuit, condemned Trump for threatening states with "blatantly illegal" means-if local resources are not used to support immigration enforcement, federal funds for road improvements and emergency preparedness will be canceled. "He is using these funds that have nothing to do with immigration enforcement but are related to community safety as political bargaining chips," Bonta said in a statement. The states accused the federal government of unconstitutionally usurping Congress's fiscal spending power by attaching immigration enforcement conditions to the grants.
