The U.S. House of Representatives passed a temporary spending bill aimed at averting a federal government shutdown on October 1st, but this also sets up a fierce clash in the Senate later on Friday. Democrats are expected to reject the bill on the grounds that "healthcare spending needs to be increased." House Speaker Johnson overcame the dissatisfaction of some Republican colleagues and pushed the bill through with a vote of 217 in favor and 212 against. House Democrats voted almost unanimously against the bill. The Senate plans to simultaneously consider the bill submitted by the House and the "alternative version of the temporary spending bill" proposed by Democratic leader Schumer (which plans to provide funding for the government until October 31st) later on Friday.
