The heads of several major central bankers around the world issued a joint statement on Tuesday in support of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, following threats from the Trump administration to bring criminal charges against him. In the statement, the heads of the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, and nine other central bankers said, "We stand in complete solidarity with the Federal Reserve System and its Chairman, Jerome Powell." They added, "The independence of central banks is the cornerstone of maintaining price, financial, and economic stability, and is in the best interests of the people we serve." The U.S. government's criminal investigation ostensibly concerns renovations at the Federal Reserve headquarters, but Powell called it a "pretext" designed to give the president influence over interest rates.
