AP Plans to Launch Chainlink Node to Publish Data

The Associated Press (AP) has announced that it will be launching its own Chainlink oracle node to ensure that any data from members of U.S. newspapers and broadcasters will be cryptographically verified.

The Associated Press said in a statement on Oct. 21 that once the node goes live, smart contract developers will have access to the agency’s “economic, sports, and game calling data.” According to the Associated Press, in addition to providing information on upcoming elections and serving artists using non-fungible tokens, it will publish data on-chain for developers to use and reference in any related applications .

Dwayne Desaulnier, Head of Blockchain and Data Licensing, AP Community, said: “Chainlink technology is an ideal way to provide smart contract developers anywhere in the world with direct, on-demand access to AP’s reliable economic, sports, and matchmaking data. Collaboration can make this information compatible with any blockchain."

The AP said the main reason for moving to blockchain is "trust," as the on-chain data it provides will be a "publicly accessible, secure, verified record of information." The news agency added that it will change its approach based on developer response, as it "keeps its finger on the pulse of the blockchain economy."

This is not the news agency’s first foray into blockchain technology. When the AP partnered with blockchain-based news startup Civil in 2018, it was reportedly interested in exploring ways to protect intellectual property, support ethical journalism, and track content usage. Additionally, the AP published the results of the contested 2020 U.S. presidential election on the Ethereum and EOS blockchains.
