Africa's largest men's football tournament series, the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), kicked off on Monday. At the same time, Binance announced its official partnership with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), as well as its official sponsorship relationship with the 2021 AFCON football tournament, becoming the tournament's first crypto and blockchain sponsor.
Through this sponsorship, Binance will also promote CAF’s social media content, including Best Assist of the Day, Best Assist of the Week, and Best Assist of the Tournament. These will cover games in all six venues in five cities in Cameroon.
CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba is "delighted to welcome Binance as the official sponsor of this year's AFCON football tournament". Mosengo-Omba said he was optimistic the partnership would "take African football to the next level".
AFCON 2021 marks the start of the African sports calendar and will run until February 6.
Binance’s partnership with CAF is part of an ongoing drive to provide financial services to Africans, who they say often have limited access to banks and other financial institutions. Binance said it has provided free cryptocurrency courses to more than 541,000 Africans so far.
“Football is the most popular sport in Africa,” said Emmanuel Babalola, director of Binance Africa. He said they hope the sponsorship will further “validate our mission to make cryptocurrencies mainstream across the continent.”
