Gaming platforms are supporting blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in their respective ecosystems.
The Epic Games Store welcomes blockchain developers and the use of cryptocurrencies in video games after Valve banned cryptocurrency and NFT-related games from Epic's main competitor, Steam.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said the Epic Games Store will support games that use blockchain technology as long as developers abide by relevant laws and disclose their terms. The games need to be age-rated by an appropriate panel, Sweeney wrote, adding:
"While Epic does not use cryptocurrencies in games, we welcome innovation in technology and finance."
In an interview with The Verge, Sweeney said that when it comes to the use of NFTs in video games, Epic is willing to work with early developers in this field as a platform provider under some restrictions. However, he previously made it clear that, as a game developer, Epic Games does not intend to use NFTs in its own products, such as Fortnite.
The CEO clarified that Epic will not support cryptocurrency transactions through its payment service, so developers will need to use other payment systems. The Epic Games Store also has no plans to integrate blockchain into its client in the near future.
Developed by major video game publisher Epic Games, the Epic Games Store is a platform for buying and downloading video games. Launched in 2018, the platform allows users to purchase digital versions of video games through a desktop client, which are then stored in a collection library, ready to be downloaded and used at any time.
Sweeney’s comments come after popular digital video game store Steam issued a ban on blockchain games. Steam’s latest guidelines for game developers state that video games that use blockchain technology and “issue or allow the transaction of cryptocurrencies or NFTs” are not allowed on the digital store.
Game developer SpacePirate claims: "Steam's point of view is that items have value, and they don't allow items with real-world value to appear on their platform."
