Scroll is a Layer 2 expansion solution for Ethereum and is designed as "zkEVM", which is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) zk-rollup.
After deploying its mainnet in October 2023, Scroll became one of the first active zkEVMs in the crypto economy and has now grown into one of the top 20 L2 networks by scale.
How Scroll works
At its core, Scroll operates through a seamless, multi-layered system. Its settlement layer acts as a bridge between Ethereum and Scroll, ensuring L2 data availability and ordering, as well as validating zkEVM validity proofs.
Working synchronously with this system is the sequence layer, which is responsible for executing transactions. It combines the efforts of execution nodes, which process transactions sent to Scroll, and rollup nodes, which organize these transactions into batches and publish them to Ethereum to ensure data availability. In addition, Rollup nodes submit proof of validity to Ethereum, which is crucial for the finality of transactions.
Complementing these layers is the proof layer, specifically designed to generate zkEVM validity proofs to ensure the correctness of L2 transactions. This layer consists of a set of provers and a coordinator who not only generate these proofs but also send them onto the Ethereum blockchain for final confirmation.
According to L2Beat, Scroll is currently the 17th largest L2 in the Ethereum scaling scene, with a TVL of $63.5 million, making it one of the most active zkEVMs in production today. Much of this activity stems from Scroll’s early DeFi scene and is currently spread across around 50 applications.
Scroll token coming soon?
Although about Scroll There is speculation that it will launch its own native coin, but for now the network is entirely ETH-centric.
As L2 develops and moves toward greater decentralization, it is likely that airdrops will eventually be conducted to empower community governance. However, official details in this regard are still unclear at the moment.

Future Picture
Scroll is obviously one of the pioneers of zkEVM technology. Since launching its mainnet in 2023, it has quickly emerged as a key player in the Ethereum scaling space. While it makes sense to try out L2 to potentially qualify for subsequent Scroll airdrops, learning to understand the network is useful in its own right, as doing so will allow you to gain more experience in the L2 space.
