Some netizens in China had thought of a very creative way of using Artificial Intelligence(AI); to predict the winning numbers of tomorrow's lottery.
The idea appeared on the Chinese internet when a mysterious person posted that on the internet they have won the lottery using AI-generated numbers recommended by tech service providers, prompting many other netizens to try their hand at the lottery too.
Chinese authorities stress that lottery draws are completely random
Following the rumour, Chinese authorities have come forward to debunk myth, explaining that every lottery draw is an generated randomly, and there is no way technology can accurately predict the "winning number".
The rise of Chinese AI startup companies like DeepSeek had prompted netizens to come out with this whacky idea of trying to strike the lottery with the help of Artificial intelligence.
But it turns out that all these claims just turn out to be fraudulent. According to officials, AI lottery prediction posts are primarily marketing tactics used by software providers to attract users.
Some platforms offer a free trial, randomly generating numbers to entice users. If a few people happen to win, the platform urges them to invest in "premium" AI-generated predictions, which ultimately do not improve winning chances.
One user shared their experience on Xiaohongshu (RedNote), revealing that they purchased lottery tickets for 19 consecutive days using AI-recommended numbers in late 2024, only to experience consistent losses.
Why AI can’t predict lottery numbers
While AI excels in fields like healthcare and mathematics, where patterns can be analyzed from vast datasets, lottery draws are entirely random, making them impossible to predict.
Lottery results are determined using physical drawing machines, where factors such as airflow, vibrations, and ball movement make the process uncontrollable and unpredictable. Furthermore, past winning numbers have no influence on future draws, meaning AI cannot derive any meaningful patterns from historical data.
The Guangdong sports lottery center urged the public to remain rational and avoid AI-based prediction services, emphasizing that official offline sports lottery stores are the only legitimate channels for purchasing lottery tickets.
Even with the record of all the previous lottery winning numbers, AI still has no way of accurately predicting the next winning number as the previous draw have no impact on the next draw, experts say.
Therefore, even with powerful tools like DeepSeek, predicting the next winning numbers is impossible.
