Pump.fun Resumes Live Streaming with New Safeguards After Harmful Content Incidents
After five months of suspension, the popular Solana-based memecoin launchpad Pump.fun is cautiously reintroducing its live-streaming feature.
The decision comes after several unsettling incidents involving harmful content led to the platform halting the feature back in November 2024.
The relaunch, however, comes with a marked shift in approach—promising a more robust moderation system designed to protect users while fostering creative expression.

a
Limited Rollout with Industry-Standard Moderation in Place
Co-founder Alon Cohen shared the news on social media, revealing that the live-streaming service would be available to just 5% of users initially.
This limited rollout aims to test the newly implemented moderation tools, which the platform has described as "industry standard."
The goal is to strike a balance between preserving creativity and ensuring a safe, positive environment for users.
Cohen explained,
“We’ve added transparent guidelines and enhanced moderation systems.”
He reassures users that the platform is taking comprehensive steps to address previous concerns.
New Moderation Guidelines and Strict Enforcement
The updated moderation policy on Pump.fun is designed to foster an environment of meaningful engagement while protecting users from illegal, harmful, and abusive content.
The guidelines clearly outline prohibited content, including violence, animal abuse, pornography, and content that endangers minors.
For users who violate these guidelines, there will be consequences such as the termination of their livestreams or even their entire accounts.
However, the policy also introduces some ambiguity.
While it bans harmful content, it acknowledges that some "NSFW" material may still appear on the platform.
The policy states,
"Pump.fun does not intend to universally define what content is ‘appropriate’ or ‘inappropriate.'"
This leaves room for the platform’s moderation team to make judgment calls on a case-by-case basis.
Return of Live Streaming Amid Declining Memecoin Market Activity
The relaunch of live-streaming comes at a time when interest in memecoins is waning.
Once a booming sector, the memecoin market has faced a steep decline following a string of high-profile failures and scams.
Tokens like Libra (LIBRA) and Melania Meme (MELANIA) have been subject to "rug pulls," and others such as Trump (TRUMP) have seen significant price drops.
According to CoinMarketCap, TRUMP has dropped over 90% from its January highs, only to rebound slightly, now sitting just 0.1% away from a 90% loss, reflecting the broader downturn in the market.
This decline is further illustrated by data from Dune Analytics, which shows a sharp fall in the "graduation rate" for tokens launched on Pump.fun.
Only 1% of tokens now meet the criteria to become tradable on major decentralized exchanges, compared to over 1.5% earlier this year.
The total number of tokens graduating has also dropped from 5,400 per week in January to fewer than 1,500 in March.
Addressing the Platform’s Moderation Failures Following Controversial Streams
Pump.fun's decision to suspend live-streaming in late 2024 came after the platform was flooded with disturbing content.
Creators, in some cases, used livestreams to make alarming threats, including one instance where a user appeared to broadcast self-harm after their token failed to meet a market goal.
This raised serious concerns among the crypto community and safety advocates about the platform’s ability to handle such content.
Following the backlash, the platform issued an apology, acknowledging the moderation gaps and outlining corrective actions.
This included doubling the number of human moderators and introducing automated filters to detect harmful content.
They also added support for viewers affected by the disturbing livestreams.
Challenges in Moderation and Community Response
Despite these efforts, the situation highlighted the challenges that platforms like Pump.fun face when handling large volumes of user-generated content.
Mikko Ohtamaa, co-founder of algorithmic trading firm Trading Strategy, warned that without proper moderation, the platform could face serious consequences.
He said,
"I advocate for freedom of speech, but these streams are causing practical issues where people are breaking the law in live broadcasts. This will trigger a shutdown when the mainstream media catches wind of this."
While the moderation system is now more robust, it remains to be seen how effective it will be in handling the volume of content on Pump.fun.
As of now, the platform appears committed to rebuilding trust and giving creators a safe space to connect with their audience.
In the meantime, the platform’s cautious approach in reintroducing live streaming may be the key to preventing a repeat of the harmful content that previously plagued it.
The success of this renewed effort will depend largely on how well Pump.fun can maintain its promise to balance creativity with safety, all while navigating the shifting landscape of the memecoin market.
