Spotify Brings ChatGPT Into The Mix For Music And Podcast Discovery
The next time you ask for a playlist suggestion, it might not come from Spotify’s algorithm — but from ChatGPT.
Spotify has teamed up with OpenAI’s large language model to introduce conversational recommendations that let users discover music and podcasts through natural prompts.
Beginning 6 October 2025, both Free and Premium Spotify users can link their accounts to ChatGPT to receive personalised recommendations for songs, artists, playlists, and podcast episodes.
The feature is now live in English across 145 countries, accessible on both desktop and mobile devices.
A New Kind Of Music Companion
Once connected, users can simply mention Spotify while chatting with ChatGPT to request playlists or discover new content.
Example prompts shared by Spotify include “Make a playlist with some Latin artists that are on my heavy rotation,” or “Recommend podcasts if I want to go deeper into science and innovation.”
Each response comes with clickable links that open directly in the Spotify app.
Sten Garmark, Spotify’s Senior Vice President and Global Head of Consumer Experience, said,
“By bringing Spotify into ChatGPT, we’re creating a powerful new way for fans to connect with the artists and creators they love conversationally, whenever inspiration strikes.”
The partnership expands Spotify’s long-running focus on personalisation, following integrations with Alexa, Google Home, Samsung, and Sonos.
Unlike algorithmic playlists, ChatGPT’s conversational nature allows for dynamic and contextual suggestions — from a road trip soundtrack to a study mix.
Privacy Promises Amid AI Partnerships
Spotify has stressed that this integration will not share audio, video, or music data with OpenAI for training purposes.
The company clarified that users must opt in to connect their accounts, and they can disconnect anytime.
Spotify addressed the growing industry concern over AI models trained on copyrighted material, stating,
“Artists’ and creators’ work stays protected.”
The move comes as OpenAI faces scrutiny from music publishers who allege unauthorised use of songs in training datasets.
Earlier this year, Spotify also partnered with AI voice platform ElevenLabs to expand its audiobook narration capabilities — part of its broader push to use AI responsibly while preserving creative ownership.
Balancing Innovation With Responsibility
The ChatGPT rollout follows Spotify’s crackdown on AI-generated content.
The company recently removed 75 million tracks identified as spam or impersonations and introduced policies to curb misuse.
Charlie Hellman, Spotify’s Head of Music, said,
“We’re not here to punish artists for using AI authentically and responsibly. But we are here to stop the bad actors who are gaming the system.”
Spotify has also been busy on the product side — launching long-awaited lossless audio for Premium subscribers in over 50 markets, introducing the “Mix With Spotify” function, and reintroducing direct messaging.
The company’s leadership has also shifted recently, with founder Daniel Ek stepping into the role of Executive Chair, while Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström take over as co-CEOs
The Sound Of AI’s New Reality
Spotify’s move to merge human curation with conversational AI feels inevitable, but it also raises new questions about dependency and control.
As ChatGPT becomes a hub for music, shopping, and travel, OpenAI’s growing reach could redefine how we experience culture — blending convenience with quiet consolidation.
For listeners, it’s frictionless discovery.
For the industry, it’s another reminder that artificial intelligence isn’t just shaping how we listen — it’s shaping who decides what we hear next.
