According to the Washington Post, due to difficulties in attracting Generation Z voters, President Biden's re-election campaign team is recruiting a "meme manager" to manage online content and memes.
The job posting on Daybook indicates that this position will be responsible for creating and managing online content, including memes, for the campaign.
The Biden campaign team has already adopted the "Dark Brandon" meme, which originated from a misheard incident at the Talladega Speedway in 2021. It has since been used by Biden's team as a form of self-deprecation and to appeal to young people.
Initially, this meme was a way for Biden's critics to mock him, but eventually, the Biden campaign embraced this cultural element.
The profile picture of the Biden-Harris headquarters page on Twitter features the Dark Brandon meme, showing Biden with red laser beams shooting from his eyes.
Biden has used this meme in several recent instances, including a tweet after the Super Bowl and a video mocking Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
He has also actively engaged in meme actions on social media. To celebrate the Dow Jones Industrial Average breaking the 40,000-point barrier for the first time in history, the Biden campaign posted a video from the 2020 debate where Trump predicted a market crash if Biden won the election.
Biden retweeted this video from his personal account, adding a meme of himself holding an ice cream cone, suggesting Trump took an "L" or loss.
Not only Biden, but Trump's campaign team has also released many memes.
The report suggests that using memes can be seen as a way to interact with Generation Z voters, who are the youngest group eligible to vote in the upcoming election. Biden is striving to attract this audience.
Although Biden's support among young voters is lower than Trump's, the team hopes to boost engagement with young voters through this new digital strategy.
According to a CNN poll at the end of April, Trump leads Biden by 11 percentage points among young voters aged 18-34, despite young voters typically leaning towards the Democratic Party.
Biden's responses to the Israel-Hamas conflict and the TikTok ban have dissatisfied some young voters, affecting his support rates.
A Pew Research Center survey in February found that one-third of adults under 30 express complete or partial sympathy for the Palestinian people, while 14% express sympathy for Israel.
Due to U.S. support for Israel, riots have erupted on college campuses nationwide, resulting in student arrests.
Biden's recent ban on the social media app TikTok has also been unfavorable among young voters. Pew Research Center's February study shows that one-third of American adults use TikTok, particularly popular among adults aged 18-34.
Florida Democratic Representative Maxwell Frost, the youngest and first Generation Z member elected to Congress, stated in March that banning TikTok does not help with young voters.
