Years of feud might be coming to an end as U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would be expecting Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit him at the White House, while he did not provide a specific timeline for the trip.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump suggested that he is still open to making a new trade deal with China, and the potential meeting is viewed as an opportunity to finally bury the hatchet and put an end to the tariff wars between the two countries.
Xi last visited the U.S. in November 2023 for a summit with then-President Joe Biden, marking his fifth trip to the country as China’s leader. That meeting resulted in agreements to resume military-to-military communications and curb fentanyl production.
Just days before Trump's inauguration, Xi and Trump had reportedly spoken through a phone call, where both leaders spoke about key issues including trade, Taiwan and TikTok.
On February 19, Trump confirmed ongoing discussions with China about TikTok, as Washington seeks to facilitate the sale of the app, which is owned by Chinese parent company ByteDance.
Apparently, this wasn't the last time that both the leaders spoke to one another. Trump, also admitted that he did
talk to Xi after assuming office, but did not disclose the details of their conversation. When asked about the phone call, China's China’s foreign ministry declined to comment on the enquiry, instead pointing to their previously scheduled call before his inauguration.
Washington and Beijing have been at odds over various issues, including trade tariffs, cybersecurity, TikTok, Taiwan, Hong Kong, human rights, and the origins of COVID-19. Despite longstanding tensions, Trump’s comments suggest potential diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
Trump Suggests Potential Deal With Russia Over Ukraine
Apparently, China is not the only country that Trump is reaching out to. In a recent interview, Trump told reporters that he is believes that Russia holds the decisive power to a end the war in Ukraine, since they have taken over a significant amount of territory in Ukraine.
President Trump later blamed Ukraine for the war, stating" you should have never started it. You could have made a deal."
In the interview, President Trump also revealed that he is currently trying to strike a deal with Russia to stop the killings.
"We can make a deal with Russia to stop the killing."
Trump’s remarks signal possible shifts in U.S. foreign policy, with both China and Russia as focal points of his administration’s diplomatic strategy.
