US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump promised to "end Joe Biden's war on cryptocurrency" at a rally in Racine, Wisconsin on June 18.
Trump said his goal was to "ensure the future of cryptocurrency and the future of Bitcoin will be made in the United States." He warned that if the United States does not do this, other countries will seize the opportunity.
Trump's campaign has challenged Biden's economic policies outside of cryptocurrency in other ways. In a statement to Reuters, Trump campaign spokeswoman Anna Kelly described "rising prices, falling wages and stagnant manufacturing" under Biden.
Reuters noted that the town where the rally took place is home to the controversial Foxconn factory. During his first term, Trump credited the construction of the plant to his pro-manufacturing policies, but the plant ultimately failed to provide the number of jobs expected.
Trump has insisted that his crypto strategy will “create opportunities for young people.”
Trump’s Earlier Crypto Pledges
Trump’s latest pro-crypto pledge follows other similar statements. On May 8, Trump called for support from the cryptocurrency community, saying, “If you’re pro-crypto, you better vote for Trump.”
Later, on June 7, he pledged to end the “Biden-Gensler crusade against crypto.” Trump’s statement referenced Gary Gensler, the Biden administration’s appointee to chair the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
On June 12, Trump said he intended to have the United States mine all remaining Bitcoin, claiming such a policy would help the country establish energy dominance.
Biden's approach uncertain
Amid Trump's more outspoken support for the cryptocurrency industry, Biden's rivals could potentially change their harsh stance on the industry.
The Biden campaign is reportedly seeking input from members of the cryptocurrency industry on its outreach approach. And, following Trump's earlier decision to accept cryptocurrencies through Coinbase Commerce, the Biden campaign may soon do so.
None of these actions have been taken or confirmed by the Biden campaign, however. Only anonymous sources have reported on the alleged plans so far.
