YouTube Clarifies New Gambling Policy After Crypto Creators Sound Alarm
YouTube’s new gambling policy sent ripples through the crypto gaming scene this week, as creators feared their videos on NFTs and blockchain games could be banned under the updated rules. But the platform has clarified that crypto-related content will remain unaffected — easing fears across the industry.
The policy update, which takes effect on November 17, expands YouTube’s restrictions on gambling content. The platform will now prohibit creators from redirecting viewers to gambling sites that offer “additional items with monetary value,” such as video game skins, cosmetics, or NFTs.
The announcement initially sparked panic among crypto gamers, who worried that blockchain titles — where in-game items often hold real-world value — might fall under the new definition. Some likened it to a potential “crypto content wipeout.”
However, a YouTube spokesperson confirmed to Decrypt that the new restrictions are not aimed at general crypto or gaming content.
“Content showing video game skins or cosmetics creators earn in games or general discussions about items with real-world monetary value, such as NFTs, will not be impacted by this update.”
Policy Targets Unlicensed Gambling, Not Crypto
The revised policy comes following an unsettling trend: unlicensed gambling platforms trying to strike a deal with creators to promote their websites in exchange for payouts in digital assets like crypto or NFTs.
With that being said, certified gambling operators approved by Google — those adhering to region-specific regulations — won’t be affected by the ban. However, their content will be age restricted.
YouTube’s decision follows mounting pressure on social media platforms to take action against gambling-style content and sponsorships that target younger audiences. Over the past year, online gambling promotions — including those offering crypto or NFT rewards — have drawn regulatory scrutiny for their blurred lines between entertainment and risk-based gaming.
By tightening its policies, YouTube aims to crack down on unregulated gambling ads while maintaining space for legitimate gaming and blockchain creators.
Crypto Creators Breathe a Sigh of Relief
The clarification came as a relief for many crypto-focused creators, who initially feared another wave of demonetization or takedowns. Pseudonymous content creator Iceyyy said the changes were “a reasonable and healthy update,” emphasizing that the policy targets casino-like platforms rather than educational or gameplay-related crypto videos.
YouTube also reaffirmed that any video promising guaranteed returns or risk-free profits will be removed, even if the site or app being promoted is certified. This means creators who mislead viewers with “get-rich-quick” schemes remain at risk of penalties.
While the crypto community’s fears appear unfounded for the moment, YouTube’s move underscores a broader trend — platforms are becoming more proactive in policing financial and gambling-related content.
The new rules mark a balanced approach: YouTube is targeting predatory and unregulated gambling promotions while allowing legitimate blockchain gaming and NFT discussions to thrive. However, the overlap between gaming, digital assets, and speculation remains thin.
If future regulation continues to equate tokenized rewards with gambling, crypto content could again find itself in the crosshairs. For now, though, creators can continue building — as long as they steer clear of risky promises and shady sponsors.
