Vitalik Buterin recently discussed the significant synergy between the FOCIL mechanism and Ethereum's EIP-8141 proposal on the X platform. According to PANews, EIP-8141 aims to elevate smart accounts, including multi-signature, quantum-resistant signatures, key changes, and gas sponsorship, to "first-class citizens." This means operations from these accounts can be directly packaged as on-chain transactions without additional encapsulation. Additionally, privacy protocols can achieve multi-tenant account models through paymaster or 2D nonce mechanisms, gaining native support.
FOCIL offers a censorship-resistant mechanism for rapid transaction inclusion. When combined, various transactions, including smart wallet, gas sponsorship, and privacy protocol transactions, can be included in blocks by one of 17 randomly selected roles (proposers or includers) per slot. Buterin noted that this design ensures transactions are almost certain to be included on-chain within 1–2 slots in adversarial environments.
Currently, each FOCIL is about 8kB in size, relatively small, but there is a future expansion path to support most transactions in blocks through the FOCIL channel. This architecture is similar to the multi-parallel proposer (MCP) design but differs in that FOCIL does not control the MEV-related "last look" rights, which are still allocated through the ePBS auction mechanism.
Buterin emphasized that even if 100% of block slots are monopolized by adversaries through the proposer-builder separation (PBS) mechanism, refusing to connect to the public mempool or discriminating against specific applications, FOCIL can still ensure all transactions are quickly included. While this design does not eliminate the centralization risk of the proposer role, it significantly weakens its power.
Under the EIP-8141 framework, transactions from smart wallets or privacy protocols can be directly received by FOCIL includers through the public mempool without additional intermediaries or encapsulation processes. Buterin concluded that Ethereum is accelerating its core architecture upgrades.
