The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has put forward a proposal that would permit cryptocurrency exchanges to mandate electronic delivery of Form 1099-DA to millions of users. According to NS3.AI, this proposal does not alter the information that brokers are required to report to the IRS. Under the proposed rule, exchanges would have the option to decline service to customers who do not agree to receive the form electronically. The proposal is open for public comments until May 5, 2026. If approved, the new requirement could be implemented for forms distributed as early as the 2027 tax season or later.
