PANews posted on X (formerly Twitter). In a public debate with e/acc representative Beff Jezos, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed his views on the timeline for the arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Buterin stated that while he is not opposed to AGI, he believes that an eight-year timeline is safer than four years.
Buterin emphasized that paths which genuinely consider human involvement and respect individual circumstances cannot be accelerated through sheer computational power. He highlighted the disparity in development, noting that while some are creating advanced technologies, others in the same city struggle with homelessness, a situation he described as an "extremely imbalanced acceleration" characteristic of American society.
He argued that delaying AGI by four years is worthwhile, but a delay of four hundred years is unacceptable. However, he questioned whether humanity truly has the ability to choose an eight-year path for AGI development.
