Japan and France Strengthen Cooperation on Mineral Supply Chains

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held talks with visiting French President Emmanuel Macron, reaching an agreement to enhance cooperation on critical mineral supply chains and rare earth procurement. According to RTHK, the leaders also discussed the situation in the Middle East, agreeing on the importance of ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and working towards de-escalation. They confirmed their commitment to closely collaborate on securing oil supplies. This visit marks Macron's return to Japan since 2023. On the same day, the foreign and defense ministers of both countries conducted a 2+2 meeting, agreeing to strengthen defense cooperation.
