According to U.Today, Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, recently exposed a scammer who was impersonating Solana Founder Anatoly Yakovenko. Hoskinson shared a recorded chat trail on his official account, detailing his interaction with the fraudster who was posing as 'Anatoly'. The scammer had asked Hoskinson to visit a website to claim some tokens.
The conversation began with the impersonator asking Hoskinson if he had claimed a 20% reward on his TrueUSD balance in his wallet. Instead of blocking the scammer, Hoskinson played along, asking what steps he needed to take to claim the rewards. The fraudster then directed him to a scam website and instructed him to click on 'Claim Reflections' and follow the subsequent instructions.
Hoskinson then began questioning the scammer about why he couldn't claim the rewards directly from his wallet. The responses from the scammer revealed the fraudulent nature of the offer. Interestingly, the account used by the scammer was verified, adding a layer of seeming legitimacy to the impersonated identity.
There is increasing concern about scams in the crypto ecosystem, with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) tools further complicating the situation. Deepfake videos impersonating top crypto personalities, including Hoskinson and Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, are becoming more common in the industry.
Campaigns against crypto scams have been launched by entities like Ripple Labs Inc., aiming to educate their communities about scam tactics. The video shared by Hoskinson serves as another method of educating his followers, as most interactions with scammers typically follow a similar pattern, where the right probing questions can reveal the scammer's true intentions.
