CZ Seeks Action from Elon Musk to End Bot-Driven Spam on X
Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) recently called on Elon Musk to ban bots—automated accounts used to spam content, manipulate engagement, or launch coordinated attacks—on the X (formerly known as Twitter) platform.
In a separate comment, CZ made a distinction between these bots and AI agents, highlighting that while AI has valuable real-world applications, such as booking hotels or writing code, it should not be socialised with like bots.
Bots, however, remain a persistent issue on X, especially within the cryptocurrency community, where they promote scams, fake tokens, phishing links, and pump-and-dump schemes.
X’s Bot Problem Can’t Seemed to be Resolved
Bot accounts have long been a persistent issue on X, particularly within the cryptocurrency space, where hackers and scammers use them for malicious purposes.
These automated accounts are often designed to impersonate prominent figures, promote fake crypto coins, and redirect users to harmful websites to steal credentials and funds.
Despite ongoing calls from the crypto community for Musk to address this problem since his acquisition of the platform in 2022, little has been done to effectively curb bot activity.
Musk has long been vocal about the impact of bots, even suggesting that they made up as much as 20%-90% of platform traffic when he was in the process of buying Twitter.
His concerns about fake users were a significant part of the conversation at that time, and though he proposed solutions, including requiring credit card registration to impose small fees on new accounts, bots continue to thrive.
These accounts often impersonate crypto influencers to promote fake tokens, or use phishing links to mislead users into visiting malicious sites.
Moreover, the rise of AI-powered chatbots has exacerbated scams, particularly in romance fraud, where scammers build false relationships to manipulate victims into sending money, often through fabricated investment opportunities or financial hardships.
