Employees at the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development were greeted by a very disturbing sight in their office when they entered their office on Monday; playing on the screen was a fake video of President Donald Trump massaging and kissing the feet of his billionaire adviser Elon Musk.
The deepfake video was set to play on a continuous loop across multiple monitors at the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The AI-generated clip was titled "Long Live the Real King", referencing and mocking President Donald Trump's recent Truth Social post, where he declared himself the king of the free world.
HUD's retaliation against Elon Musk's tyranny
The source of the video remains unknown, and it is unclear whether it was the result of a hack or an internal prank.
The footage, which played for an extended period, quickly went viral, with online debates raging over whether it was a cybersecurity breach or a coordinated stunt.
HUD spokesperson Kasey Lovett responded to the incident, telling The Hill, "Another waste of taxpayer dollars and resources. Appropriate action will be taken for all involved."
The prank coincided with the controversial directive from Elon Musk to conduct a mass layoffs across the federal government, including at HUD, where some managers have been told to expect a 50% reduction in the number of agency employees.
Musk even sent an email requiring employees to submit a five-bullet summary of their work, with the failure to do so resulting in an immediate termination.
As such, this prank was celebrated by many disgruntled HUD employees who view this prank as a sign of resistance against Musk's tyranny.
Another HUD employee shared that everyone is talking and laughing about it.
Trump Celebration of NYC Congestion Pricing Decision
On February 19, Trump posted on his Truth Social account to celebrate his administration's decision to kill New York City’s congestion pricing program.
The bill was viewed as significant victory for the administration, as Trump wrote
"Congestion pricing is dead. Manhattan, and all of New York, is saved. Long live the King."
The White House later amplified this message by sharing a parody of himself on the Time Magazine cover, with a giant photo of him dressed like a king features on the cover of the page.
Trump has long opposed congestion pricing, arguing it would harm New York’s economy.
Trump's administration had formally halted the program through a letter from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to Governor Kathy Hochul, citing concerns over its impact on working-class Americans.
Who is the real king of the free world?
The relationship between Donald Trump and Elon Musk has been a point of contention as Musk's power has grown.
The idea of Elon Musk being the real person running the show is also a rhetoric that the Democrats has been trying to promulgate to get under the skin of President Trump.
During an interview with Fox News, Trump shared how the media is using such rhetoric to drive a wedge between him and Elon Musk.
Since Trump's re-entering into the White House, many have noticed how Musk has visually dominated Trump in all of their recent joint appearances.
In their interview last week with Fox News, Trump was interrupted and spoken over quite a few times by Musk. One week prior to the interview, Musk was seen spending more time talking to reporters than Trump did during a join Oval Office press conference.
To the world, the image was very clear: While Trump might be the endowed with the title of the President of the United States, but Elon Musk is actually the one in the driver seat.
MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell measured the time spent taking by each administrative figurehead and found that Musk had spoken 3,666 words at the executive order signing, whereas Trump spoke 2,487 words.
Musk could be the only person who dared to steal the limelight from Donald Trump, a very stark contrast with the behaviour of other politicians around Trump such as former vice President Mike Pence and Vice President JD Vance, who never dared to speak more than and definitely would not speak over President Trump.
This disparity calls into question how much power does Elon Musk really have in the administration, and whether this kind of relationship would ultimately cause a strain in the relationship between the two men.
Politico's senior political columnist wrote earlier this month about Trump's love for attention and how he won't let anyone steal his limelight.
"The Trump Show is a one-man play. And there's no room for anybody else, least of all somebody wealthier and with a nearly comparable thirst for attention."
