Newly Pardoned Ulbricht to Speak Out in Surprise Documentary
More than a decade after inspiring numerous feature films, documentaries, books, and podcasts, Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht—infamously known as "Dread Pirate Roberts"—is set to share his story in an upcoming documentary.
Participating from federal prison, Ulbricht provided exclusive insights into his journey from an idealistic entrepreneur to the mastermind behind the infamous darknet marketplace.
On 22 January, filmmakers Blake J. Harris and Jonah Tulis—best known for the Console Wars documentary—announced they had compiled over 60 hours of interview footage with Ulbricht during his incarceration.
According to Harris, the documentary, currently in post-production and slated for a 2025 release, will chronicle Ulbricht’s evolution "from a literal Eagle Scout to the center of a global manhunt."
Tulis hinted that the film aims to dispel "many misconceptions" surrounding Ulbricht and the circumstances that led to his arrest.
The documentary comes as Ulbricht experiences an unexpected turn of fortune.
After nearly 12 years behind bars in Tucson, Arizona, he was released on 21 January following a pardon from President Donald Trump—a campaign promise made during the Libertarian National Convention in May.
Ulbricht was originally sentenced to two life terms plus 40 years for creating and operating Silk Road, an illicit online marketplace often referred to as "the Amazon for drugs."
According to the FBI, the platform facilitated hundreds of millions in illegal transactions before Ulbricht's dramatic 2013 arrest in a San Francisco library.
Operating Silk Road from 2011 until his capture, Ulbricht was convicted of money laundering, computer hacking, and conspiracy to traffic narcotics.
His life sentence, without the possibility of parole, became a rallying point for libertarian and cryptocurrency advocates who viewed his punishment as excessive.
Ulbricht’s story has captivated the public for years.
In 2020, CBS aired a documentary featuring interviews with his former girlfriend and FBI agents involved in the case.
Lionsgate followed in 2021 with a dramatised adaptation starring actor Nick Robinson.
Despite initial interest from the acclaimed Coen Brothers in 2016, a proposed film based on Ulbricht’s life never materialised.
As the new documentary nears completion, questions linger about Ulbricht’s legacy and whether this retelling will reshape public perception of one of the most notorious figures in internet history.
Who Are The Filmmakers Blake J. Harris and Jonah Tulis?
Filmmakers Harris and Tulis are known for their work on Console Wars (2020), which chronicled the intense rivalry between Nintendo and Sega in the 1990s, and GameStop: Rise of the Players (2022), which explored the unprecedented memestock craze.
Beyond filmmaking, Harris is an accomplished author, having penned Console Wars, The History of the Future—a deep dive into the rise of Oculus—and an upcoming biography of comedy legend Larry David.
Ulbricht Gave No Interviews to the Press
Since his 2015 conviction, Ulbricht has largely remained silent, avoiding media interviews—except for a recorded message shared at a Bitcoin conference in 2021.
However, since 2019, filmmakers Tulis and Harris have quietly conducted over 60 hours of interviews with Ulbricht for an upcoming documentary, now in its final stages and slated for a 2025 release.

Co-director Harris, an author, said:
“Our interviews are incredibly in-depth and cover the entire gamut of Ulbricht’s life. How he went from being a literal Eagle Scout to the center of a global manhunt.”
Silk Road played a pivotal role in Bitcoin’s early adoption, serving as the primary currency for transactions on the platform.
Following his conviction, Ulbricht became a rallying figure for cryptocurrency advocates and libertarians who aligned with his principles.
Co-director Tulis noted:
“Silk Road was a phenomenon. But there are many misconceptions about what it was and who Ross really is. Our film is a no-holds-barred look at what really happened and how things wound up spiraling out of control.”
The documentary also features insights from law enforcement officials involved in the Silk Road investigation, offering a comprehensive look at the controversial case.
Will Ulbricht Stand Out Post Pardon or Will He Step Away From the Limelight?
Following his release from the US Penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona, social media and news outlets quickly circulated a photo of Ulbricht.
However, as of now, he has yet to make a public statement regarding former President Trump’s commutation of his sentence or post any updates on his blog, which he maintained while in prison.
Whether Ulbricht intends to take on a public role in the crypto industry remains uncertain.
Notably, high-profile figures such as former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao(CZ) have also stepped away from the spotlight after serving prison sentences—though CZ completed his four-month term in full, unlike Ulbricht’s presidential pardon.
As speculation swirls, the question remains: will Ulbricht embrace his newfound freedom in the public eye, or retreat from it?
