WhatsApp, Telegram & Instagram Prime Targets of Scammers
According to a recent Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) report, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Instagram remain top targets for online scammers.
In the first quarter of 2024 alone, there were 43,797 complaints related to WhatsApp, 22,680 involving Telegram, and 19,800 concerning Instagram.
The report also underscores a growing trend of cybercriminals leveraging Google services, particularly its advertising platform, to orchestrate scams across borders.
Among the most alarming schemes is the "Pig Butchering Scam," a global menace tied to investment fraud, money laundering, and even cyber slavery.
The report states:
“Vulnerable groups such as unemployed youth, housewives, students, and people in financial need are being lured into these scams, often losing large amounts of money, including borrowed funds.”
Standing United Against Cyber Crimes
To tackle the surge in online fraud, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has joined forces with platforms like Google and Facebook to share intelligence, block illegal digital lending apps, and combat platform abuse, such as the misuse of Google's Firebase for hosting.
I4C also focuses on identifying threats like malicious Android banking malware while enhancing the skills of law enforcement, forensic examiners, prosecutors, and judges through specialised cybersecurity and digital forensics training.
Collaboration between government agencies and tech giants is vital in preventing scams and safeguarding users.
The Government of India's National Cybercrime Reporting Portal provides a streamlined way for victims to report cybercrimes, including hacking, identity theft, online fraud, and cyberbullying.
Designed to address a wide range of offenses, with a particular focus on crimes against women and children, the portal allows users to submit complaints, upload evidence, and track case progress.
Additionally, it offers valuable resources, including cyber safety tips and prevention guidelines, to help users protect themselves from digital threats.
