Gary Gensler has officially concluded his four-year term as the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), a role he has taken on since 2021.
During his tenure, Gensler spearheaded regulatory changes aimed at bolstering market integrity, improving corporate governance, and safeguarding investor interests.
In a farewell statement issued by the SEC Commissioners on Monday, it praised and celebrated Gensler’s contributions to public service
“Together, we have returned billions of dollars to investors harmed by violations of the securities laws and helped educate the public on the risks and rewards of investing their savings.”
Looking back at Gensler’s Legacy during his tenure
Throughout his tenure Gensler has also spearheaded significant reforms, including improvements to fund disclosures, insider trading plans, and settlement timelines, all aimed at strengthening the agency’s core mission of protecting investors and maintaining market efficiency.
In its statement to Gensler, the Commission also said that all these massive achievements have cemented Gensler's unwavering commitment not only to the public service but also to American investors.
But Gensler has also been harshly criticised for some of his policies, many of which concern crypto. Gensler has been criticised on many occasions for cracking down hard on crypto companies and adopting a more conservative approach regarding crypto regulations.
One of his most prominent cases was his high-profile lawsuits against major crypto exchanges like Biannce and Coinbase, where he accused them of operating unregistered securities exchanges and facilitating the trade of unregistered.securities.
Gensler also crashed with Ripple Labs, in which the SEC argued that the sale of Ripple's XRP token constituted an unregistered securities offering. The litigation later became a flashpoint in the broader debate over the classification of digital assets.
A Day of Transition: Trump’s Second Term Begins
But the departure of Gensler is not the only big political event that is unfolding in the United
States; the U.S is also welcoming its former president, Donald Trump in Washington D.C.
Donald Trump has overcome all odds, from assasination attempts, multiple impeachments, and criminal indictment to finally land himself in the Whitehouse.
Due to freezing weather, the inauguration ceremony was held indoors in the Capitol Rotunda, breaking with four decades of tradition. An alternate event replaced the customary inaugural parade.
In his inaugural address, Trump pledged to launch “the complete restoration of America,” promising to reverse the policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden, and to restore public trust in government.
