Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that social media giant TikTok has pledged its commitment to collaborate with the Communications Ministry, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and Bank Negara Malaysia to address issues of cyberbullying, scams, and slander on its platform.
The Prime Minister made this statement after his meeting with Tiktok's CEO Shou Zi Chew on Thursday.
Additionally, Anwar revealed that their discussion included Malaysia’s proposed social media regulatory framework, which would require platforms like TikTok to obtain licensing and adhere to stricter guidelines to ensure user safety.
The meeting also touched on TikTok’s investment plans in Malaysia, with TikTok pledging to expand its investments significantly. Furthermore, TikTok affirmed its support for Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN.
The Prime Minister's visit to Peru, which began on Nov 12, marks his first official trip to Latin America since taking office in November 2022.
Anwar is set to participate in the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting (AELM) from November 14-16, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations between Malaysia and Peru.
