India and Malaysia Pledge to Enhance Semiconductor Cooperation

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday, August 8, to discuss strengthening cooperation in the semiconductor sector. According to Ming Pao, the leaders signed several agreements covering renewable energy, healthcare, and artificial intelligence. Modi emphasized that, in addition to digital technology, the two countries will enhance collaboration in semiconductors, healthcare, and food security. Anwar highlighted the importance of the meeting in elevating bilateral strategic relations. Malaysia ranks as the sixth-largest semiconductor exporter globally, with the industry accounting for approximately 25% of its GDP, particularly excelling in downstream packaging and testing. Prior to the summit, India's Ministry of External Affairs praised Malaysia's 30 to 40 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, noting its strong foundational capabilities. This expertise has attracted Indian companies, including Tata Electronics, to explore research and development and manufacturing opportunities in Malaysia.
