Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced on Friday that he is no longer closely aligned with the Future of Life Institute (FLI), a group that received SHIB tokens from him in 2021. According to Cointelegraph, Buterin initially supported the institute due to its broad roadmap aimed at reducing existential risks, including those associated with artificial intelligence, biology, and nuclear threats, alongside wider pro-peace and pro-epistemics initiatives. This vision motivated his donation of Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens.
However, Buterin noted that the institute has since shifted towards cultural and political advocacy concerning AI risks, a direction he described as materially different from the original strategy presented to him. He expressed concerns that large-scale coordinated political actions backed by significant financial resources could lead to unintended consequences, provoke backlash, and address issues in a manner that is authoritarian and fragile, even if not initially intended.
The Future of Life Institute outlines its mission as reducing extreme risks and guiding transformative technologies to benefit humanity. The organization emphasizes the need for policies that ensure AI development enhances lives globally rather than merely increasing corporate profits. Despite this, Buterin criticized some of the group's proposals, which focus on implementing safeguards in biosynthesis devices and AI models to prevent harmful outputs. He argued that such measures are fragile, as there are numerous ways to bypass, fine-tune, or otherwise circumvent these restrictions.
In 2021, Buterin received substantial amounts of SHIB tokens and other dog-themed tokens, as developers sought to leverage his name for marketing purposes. He subsequently allocated some of these tokens to charitable causes, with the FLI being one of the beneficiaries. Buterin expressed surprise at the value of the donated tokens, which reached approximately half a billion dollars, far exceeding his expectations. He anticipated that the institute would cash out at most $10-25 million, doubting the SHIB market's depth to support larger transactions. Instead, the FLI managed to cash out around $500 million.
In June 2021, the FLI announced a $25 million multi-year grants program, made possible by support from Buterin and the Shiba Inu community. Cointelegraph reached out to the FLI for comments but had not received a response by the time of publication.
