Nigeria's EFCC Dismisses More Than 40 Staff Over Alleged Corruption

According to the BBC, Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it dismissed more than 40 employees over alleged corruption and financial misconduct in the past three years. EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyede said more than five of those dismissed were already facing prosecution, while case files were being prepared against others. Olukoyede said the agency had recovered 1.23 trillion naira ($925m, £683m) and maintained a conviction rate of more than 75% since he took over in October 2023. He said the commission received 49,673 petitions, investigated 39,615 cases, filed 14,476 cases in court and secured 10,872 convictions between October 2023 and July 2026. In the first half of 2026, the EFCC recorded 1,370 convictions from 1,889 filings. He also said the agency renamed its Department of Internal Affairs the Department of Ethics and Integrity and introduced a gifts-and-hospitality policy requiring officers to declare gifts above a certain threshold.
