Meta's $18 Billion Settlement Could Clear Way for New AI Product Launches

According to CNBC, Meta's $18 billion social media settlement has removed a legal overhang that some analysts say could open the door to a wave of new AI product launches. Meta went to trial in August after 29 U.S. state attorneys general sued, alleging that Instagram and Facebook had design features that harmed younger users. In week two of the trial, Meta and the states reached a settlement under which the company said it would make core changes for users under 18, including a two-hour daily usage limit, disabling extreme makeup and cosmetic surgery filters, and adding tighter age verification measures. Morgan Stanley said substantial lawsuits often push tech giants to release new products and cited multiple items in Meta's pipeline, including a better MetaAI, agentic ad tools for small and medium-sized businesses, subscription offerings, an API offering, neocloud optionality and more. The bank also said Meta is reportedly set to release its consumer AI agent Hatch in early September, which would run inside WhatsApp and Instagram and handle tasks such as online purchases and restaurant bookings. Meta said it will book a $10 billion legal charge in the third quarter and pay the settlement over ten years, while its July guidance remains unchanged. Needham kept a hold rating on Meta and said the company faces rising cost pressure as it expands across chips, data centers, enterprise AI software, business agents, model APIs, compute sales, advertising tools, consumer assistants and smart glasses.
