Bitcoin's Encryption Faces Quantum Computing Threat, Says VanEck CEO

Despite these concerns, he maintains that Bitcoin remains a viable investment for the time being. Van Eck highlighted the ongoing discussions within the Bitcoin community regarding the adequacy of its encryption in light of the advancements in quantum computing. Speaking to CNBC, he emphasized the importance of this issue for both crypto enthusiasts and the general public. VanEck, a prominent crypto asset manager, has a significant presence in the Bitcoin market, including a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund in the U.S. that has attracted over $1.2 billion in inflows since its launch in early 2024. Van Eck stated that while the company supports Bitcoin, it is prepared to reassess its position if the fundamental thesis behind Bitcoin is compromised. He also noted that many Bitcoin enthusiasts are exploring Zcash, a privacy-focused token, as an alternative for more secure transactions. Zcash has experienced a remarkable surge of over 1,300% in the past three months, driven by increased interest in privacy tokens. Cryptographer Adam Back has suggested that Bitcoin is unlikely to face significant threats from quantum computing for at least two to four decades. Meanwhile, Van Eck discussed the current bear market, advising investors to adopt a dollar-cost averaging strategy rather than pursuing bull markets. He emphasized the importance of including Bitcoin in investment portfolios due to its global liquidity and on-chain realities. Van Eck also mentioned the halving cycle, noting that Bitcoin has historically experienced significant downturns every four years, with 2026 expected to be another challenging year. He observed that Bitcoin's performance in the current cycle has been less pronounced, leading some to believe that the correction may also be less severe. Bitcoin has experienced a decline of over 30% since reaching an all-time high in early October, briefly dropping to just over $82,000 before recovering to $88,000 in early trading on Monday. The market continues to navigate these fluctuations as investors position themselves for future developments.
