U.S. and India Announce Interim Trade Agreement Framework

On February 6, the White House announced that the United States and India have reached an interim agreement framework for mutually beneficial trade. According to Jin10, this framework reaffirms both countries' commitment to broader bilateral trade agreement negotiations. Initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2025, the agreement will include more market access commitments. The statement highlights that the U.S. and India pledge to continue providing preferential market access in areas of mutual interest. Under the interim agreement, India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all U.S. industrial products and a range of American food and agricultural goods. In return, the U.S. will impose an 18% 'reciprocal tariff' on goods originating from India, including textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, plastics and rubber, organic chemicals, home decor, handicrafts, and certain machinery.
