UK Reduces Bond Issuance to Lowest Level in Three Years Amid Fiscal Improvement

The UK government is set to reduce its bond issuance to the lowest level in three years, reflecting an improvement in the country's fiscal situation. According to Jin10, the UK Debt Management Office announced on Tuesday that it will sell £252.1 billion in bonds for the fiscal year starting in April. This figure slightly exceeds the £245 billion anticipated by banks surveyed but is significantly lower than the £303.7 billion for the current fiscal year. Despite the reduced supply being favorable for bond investors, concerns over inflation spurred by Middle East conflicts may hinder further interest rate cuts by the Bank of England, leading to a sell-off in UK government bonds this week. Following the announcement, the 10-year government bond maintained its earlier decline, with yields rising by 15 basis points to 4.52%. The bond sale plan follows the economic statement by Chancellor Reeves. Although the recent fiscal statement caused market turbulence, the strengthening fiscal position and expectations of rate cuts led the benchmark UK government bond yield to drop to its lowest level since 2024 last week.
