The University of Liverpool's Virtual Engineering Center (VEC) has announced it has secured £1 million in investment.
The funding will be used to establish the UK's first national digital heritage research centre and create a digital heritage ecosystem and strategy.
The centre will also promote and develop cultural heritage through technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and metaverse, using digital technology to enhance the understanding and protection of cultural and natural heritage.

Meme scammers made more than $200,000 from Rug Pulls on Bitcoin Pizza Day, according to dextools data.
Fourteen pizza-related meme coins have been issued in the last 24 hours, four of which have been confirmed as Rug Pull.
The first meme project was Pizza Coin (PIZZA). Eight minutes after launch, the development team changed the sales tax rate, making it impossible for investors to sell their positions. A total of 34 traders bought the token with a total loss of 0.9892 ETH ( $1,800), others include bitcoin pizza, pizza inu, Ethpizza, and bpizza.
At least five other projects are suspected of being honeypot scams, a type of online fraud that typically defrauds victims of their money by tricking them into investing money in bogus deals or investments.
